Bedside Organizer

Bedside Organizer
My kids constantly have junk in their beds and library books.  All my efforts to get them to put them on their dressers have failed so I'm trying these.
 Supplies needed:
-30" by 25" fabric x2 one for front and one piece for back
-30" by 10.5" fabric x2 one for front and one for back
-30" by 6"  fabric x2 one for front and one for back

-fusible interfacing (I used high loft) to sandwich between each piece
130" of 1 inch wide bias tape  (You can make your own.  I was lazy.)

Cut each piece of fabric out, sandwich interfacing between front and back and iron according to package instructions.

Put bias tape on the top of each pocket piece the 30" by 10.5" piece and 30" by 6" piece.

Sandwich two pocket pieces together and baste together on the sides.  Mark a line five inches in the front pocket.  Sew a line just on the front pocket.

Then attach both pockets to the main piece.  Find the half way line and sew through front and back pocket.  Then sew bias tape all the way around.

Lift up mattress and place the empty half of the fabric underneath.

DIY Ironing Board Cover

I have been meaning to get a new cover for my iron for years but every time I see one at the store I'm not sure the measurements of my iron and I'm disgusted at the price.

So the other day I decided to make my own.  It was super easy.  Took me 30 minutes.  I should have done it years ago.

You need sturdy fabric that won't wear out.  I looked in the aisle of household fabrics for curtains and pillows.

Measure your iron and add about 4 inches around the circumference.  I needed about 2 yards but my iron is a small one.

Then I got this pad at the store that is for an iron.  I used my old pad to cut out the new one.

I always zigzag my edges to make sure they don't fray.  Then I folded over the edge 1/2 inch and sewed that.

Then I did it again leaving an opening at the end.
Now just feed some elastic through the edge.

Then just put the pad on the iron and then the cover.

Beautiful!

Doll Bed and Clothes

My daughter's birthday is a month away and I found this cute pattern for doll beds here.
I decided to start early because I wanted to do it while she is at school.  But while making the doll bed I realized my one year old would need one and THEN my four year old son caught me sewing and begged me to make another one for his stuffed tiger.

I made it pretty manly out of an old pair of jeans.
Then I realized her American Girl doll needed some new clothes and I'm too cheap to buy them so I made them out of scrap fabric.  Cost me nothing.  So awesome!

Happy Birthday Banner

I saw this at a friend's house.  A sewn happy birthday banner.  I had to make a few.

Just cut out 15 triangles  each of two kinds of fabric.  Cut out letters or paint on with fabric paint.  I used double sided iron on interfacing to get the fabric letters on the triangles.
Then I sewed them around the edges to make them secure.
Then sew two triangles of scrap fabric together leaving the top open.  Turn right side out and pin bias tape to the tops of each triangle in order and sew on each side.  Leave enough on the ends to hang up.

Tie Onesie

When I had my first son we found a tie onsie at a store and I loved him in it.  Then when I had my most recent son my sister made me a bunch more.  They are really easy to make.
I used old stained clothes for the tie material.
Made a pattern for the tie or bow tie.

Cut it out and used my thickest stitch setting to sew it on.  You could even use fusible interfacing to make it easier.

Tie Onesies

Tis the Season for Projects.  Its cold and I need something to do with myself.  So here is something I've been working on...
My sister made me a bunch of tie onsies for my baby but he has grown out of them all so I made some more and it cost me NOTHING.  I dug through his onsies and found some plain ones.  Then I found some ugly clothes he never wore and cut them into tie shapes.  I even did some bow ties.  (Pictures to come.)

Then I realized my sewing machine was broken!  But now its fixed and wa-la!
I just sewed the ties on with an embroidery stitch.  So easy.  So fast.  It would have been easier with that double sided iron on stuff.  I forget what its called.  It was still pretty easy without though.  Try it yourself!
